Advice for Candidates:

You must bring with you to your medical the following:

• Photographic proof of Identification - this may be passport or driving licence.  We are unable to carry out a test without this.
• Your National Insurance number.

Alcohol, drug misuse and smoking can cause significant ill-health, leading to absenteeism, disciplinary problems and reduced effectiveness at work. 

The 1992 Transport and Works Act made it illegal for transport workers in safety-sensitive positions to report for duty having taken alcohol or drugs. Their employers would also be committing a crime if they failed to use due diligence to prevent alcohol or drugs use.  

Drug and Alcohol policies are backed up with drug and alcohol testing, both after an accident and randomly. Employees who fail tests face dismissal and, if convicted for an offence, imprisonment. 

A start could be made with the testing of all potential recruits for drugs and alcohol abuse.  

Staff are actively encouraged to come forward with problems and the intention is that they should be treated sympathetically.
